My Dream School
Have you ever sat down long enough to dream about if you ever had the chance to design and build your own school? I know I have, plenty of times! Just as Krissy Venosdale, a teacher for about ten years, said in her blog, "If I Built A School," my dream school would be nice, and cozy. Venosdale mentioned "colorful walls, comfy seating, nooks, and crannies where kids could collaborate, discuss, dream, and learn, a treehouse in the library with fake trees that contain lights. An art room that looks more like a studio. A cafeteria that looks like a seating area at a cozy, modern coffee house and could be used throughout the day as another comfy gathering space." Her description of her dream school, is exactly how I imagine the school I dream of!! It would be a place that the children would want to go, and actually enjoy going to!! When building a school, one would need to think of the educational aspects as well. Teacher's would need to consider that it is a learning environment, but hey, learning can be fun. And that is exactly what every teacher would do, make learning FUN!!
Sugata Mitra is Professor of Educational Technology at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University, England. He is best known for his "Hole in the Wall" experiment, and widely cited in works on literacy and education. In his video "Sugata Mitra TED 2013 Talk" he explained how schools are obsolete and what the difference between schooling in the past, present and future! Wow, things have changed!! Today we are so absorbed with technology that you cannot go anywhere without it being thrown in your face! However, sometimes it isn't a bad thing. When I start teaching, my classroom will be a very tech savvy class. (You have to keep up with the world!!)
What I want my students to learn and what tools will they use?!My students will learn the general, social studies, math, science, and reading, but we will learn on a technological system. I will have either a SmartBoard of a Promethean Board in my room!
What I want my kids to be able to do! My students will be able to work a SmartBoard of Promethean Board efficiently.
What will be my primary way of teaching my students what I want them to know and to do? My students will learn on a hands on system and as mentioned before, a technological system!
What role will my students play in the classroom? My students will play a major role in the classroom!! They will help each other learn and focus on the materials. My students will also help me teach, so that they will be able to learn in a different aspect.

ReplyDeleteWe do have similar views of what we would like our classrooms to be! I guess that's why we are both elementary education majors. :) I've never heard of a Promeathean board? How is that different from a smart board and which would be more effective for first time teachers?
Great job this first post! Keep up the good work and stay on time with everything and you will have no problem coming out with an A in EDM.

Melissa, a Promethean Board and a SmartBoard are very similar. A SmartBoard would be easier to use than a Promethean. With that being said, a Promethean Board has more of a variety when it comes to the stylus. There are more colors to choose from rather than just black, red, green, and blue. For the most part, they are the same. (And I assume there is a price difference!!) :) See you Tuesday!!

ReplyDeleteWe have very similar views of our "dream school." This kind of environment would make learning fun for the students. It would also make school a happy place instead of a place children dread coming to. My students will also play a major role in the classroom.
Why this fascination with SMARTboards or their equivalent?

ReplyDeleteDr. Strange, I find SMARTboards interesting. When I was in elementary, middle, and high school, I did not get to experience the "new" way of learning. I believe that placing a SMARTboard each classroom will be very beneficial, because the boards will take learning to new levels and will be able to grasp the attention to students who have a hard time focusing, like myself.
